Adult Ed Ministry

St. George’s offers a wide variety of Christian education opportunities.

Sunday Adult Forum

From September through June, an Adult Forum is offered on Sundays from 10:00 to 10:50 AM. Our intention is to support the members of our community as we seek to live out the Baptismal Covenant and to express our unique calling as followers of Jesus Christ. Join us in the parish hall.

Bible study: Monday noon

St. George’s offers brownbag Bible study meetings from noon to 1:00 PM on Mondays, beginning this year on September 15. We will study will study two books of the Bible in 2008-2009: Exodus and Acts. The cost of the resource book for each course is $23 ($46 for both); scholarships are available.

Bible study: Tuesday morning

Each Tuesday morning two or more people meet from 7:00 to 8:00 AM at the Ballston Place Gourmet, a deli/cafe at 4601 Fairfax Drive. We eat, share fellowship, read together a Bible passage, and discuss—letting our discussion go where the spirit leads it. Your only commitment would be to come when you can.

Lenten Community Nights

St. Georgians gather in community on Tuesday evenings during Lent to prepare for Easter. We enjoy a simple supper prepared by a group in the church, and fellowship, then participate in a one-hour Lenten-themed program. Our Lenten series this year will be from March 3 through April 7, beginning with a simple supper at 6:30 PM, then programs for adults and children and youth, ending with a short Compline service at 8:30 PM. Our Lenten series topic this year will be “Soul School: A new look at basic faith questions.” The program to be a progressive series, held each week at a different Arlington Episcopal Church:

§         3/3: “Is there a God?”

§         3/10: “Who was Jesus?”

§         3/17: “How do we know what God wants us to do?”

§         3/24: “How do I pray?”

§         3/31: “What about the church?”

§         4/7: “Is there life after death?”

The series concludes on Saturday, April 11, when Arlington Episcopalians will hold a joint Easter Vigil at St. Peter’s (4250 North Glebe Road) at 7:30 PM.

Murky Book Club

The Murky Book Club meets on Wednesdays from 6:30–7:30 PM at the Murky Coffee Shop on Wilson Boulevard. This is an informal group: you don’t have to show up every week, and you don’t have to have read the book. The group is open to anyone who is interested in discussing and exploring what it means to be a Christian.

Pretty Good Book Club

St. George’s has a book club that meets on the last Friday of each month. The group meets in a restaurant that reflects the setting of the book being discussed that month. The group tends to meet at local restaurants; contact Missie Burman for more information.

Quiet Night events

St. George’s schedules “quiet night events” near the start of the seasons of Advent and Lent to provide an opportunity to spend time in prayer and meditation. Advent Quiet Night this year will be on Tuesday, December 2, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM.
