Buildings and Grounds Ministry

People who serve in the Buildings and Grounds Ministry help keep the facilities clean and functional as well as looking welcoming and hospitable. There is a need for a group of parishioners to make themselves available for performing small maintenance and repair jobs. This group is called the Toolbelt Group. There are openings on the Buildings and Grounds Committee, which makes long-range facilities-related recommendations to the vestry to assist with strategic planning.

Use of facilities

St. George’s offers its space for use by a wide variety of community, 12-step, and self-help groups.

Church landscaping completed

Photograph of the front of St. George’s after the landscaping project was completedThe Buildings and Grounds (B&G) Committee has selected a project to improve and enhance the existing shrubs and plants on both sides of the Nelson Street entrance to St. George’s.

The committee was fortunate to have a volunteer landscape architect design a plan that would expose more of the attractive features of the entrance and at the same time mask the two air conditioners. The plan was presented to the B&G Committee and was approved. The vestry gave its blessing at its May meeting and the work was done the week of June 4.

The existing shrubs and plants and one of the trees near Fairfax Drive were removed. A mixture of Encore azaleas, Dragon Lady hollies, Hick’s yews, and Knockout roses, together with creeping juniper, will bring more color to the entrance. This project was underwritten by several anonymous donors.

The B&G committee will be undertaking several projects as part of the Centennial Celebrations, including building new concrete steps in June at the rear door of the Iglesia San José. I’ll let you know about other B&G projects.
