St. Georges Alcohol Use Policy
Last Revised 1/98
In accordance with the custom of this congregation and the decision of
the vestry and rector, it is permissible to serve alcoholic beverages at any function
taking place in the facilities of St. Georges Church in compliance with the laws of
the Commonwealth of Virginia and subject to the following policy.
-
Through the parish administrator (jobelser@saintgeorgeschurch.org), the
rector is to be notified in advance of the intent to serve alcoholic beverages.
-
The organization serving alcoholic beverages is to
specify the beginning and ending time of availability of such beverages in advance and
such times are not to be extended without the permission of the senior church official
present in the building at the time.
-
Alternate non-alcoholic beverages are to be offered to
participants at any function with equal dignity and hospitality. Suitable alternative
beverages might include non-alcoholic sparkling wine, punch, soda drinks, fruit juice,
coffee or tea.
-
The method of serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic
drinks should be equal as well as the type of drinking containers available.
-
A tasteful and appropriate identifying card should be
placed at any bowl of punch that contains alcohol.
-
Advertising and publicity for events at St.
Georges are not to mention alcoholic beverages even if they are to be available. For
example: For a dinner party to be held at the church, it would be appropriate to say,
beverages of your choice will be available before the meal. Please do not say,
cocktail hour at 6:30 PM.
-
Alcoholic beverages may not be sold.
Obviously the operating principle for these guidelines is that all
available beverages shall be treated with equal dignity. There should be no implied
statement or action that one type of beverage is correct or right or the acceptable
standard while other beverages are wrong or exceptions.
