Arlington Neighborhood Day 5/10

St. George’s will participate in Arlington Neighborhood Day on Saturday, May 10, in Oakland Park (across North Ninth Street from the church) from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Time Out 5/10

Time Out (for women) meets on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, beginning about 7:30 AM and ending about 9:30 AM, usually in the Rhodes Room. Please join us for conversation and fellowship.

Day of Pentecost 5/11

St. George’s will celebrate Pentecost—called the birthday of the Church—on Sunday, May 11.

Adult Forum 5/11

St. George’s holds an Adult Forum on Sundays from 10:00 to 10:50 AM in the parish hall. On May 11 parishioner Garrett Vaughan will lead a discussion about applying our Sunday “St. George’s life” to our “Monday-to-Friday” lives. Please join Garrett and bring your own experiences to share.

Rite-13 parents’ meeting 5/11

St. George’s asks the parents of those who will be participating in the Rite-13 liturgy on May 18 to meet in Room 114 at 10:00 AM on Sunday, May 11, to plan this event.

Monday Bible study 5/12

St. George’s Monday Bible study is tackling the Bible’s book of Revelation to find its message for us today of affirmation of victory and hope. The class is using from a resource published by Kerygma, and meets in Room 207 at 12:00 Noon on Monday, May 12, to look at Part 13: All Things New, Revelation 21:9-22:5.

St. George’s has five Listening Groups that meet monthly to help Urban Abbey members “listen to God for each other.” One group, led by Pat Loudis, will meet on second Tuesdays, next on May 13, at 7:00 PM in Room 212.

Strawberry Festival 5/17

The EYC (youth) groups of St. George’s have decided to bring back an old St. George’s tradition: Strawberry Festival, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 17. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 2-11, and $12 per family.

Spring United Thank Offering ingathering 5/18

St. George’s will receive your donations for the United Thank Offering on Sunday, May 18, at all three services.

Rite-13 liturgy 5/18

St. George’s will celebration the transition of some of the youth in the parish from childhood to adulthood, using the Rite-13 liturgy, on Sunday, May 18, at the 11:00 AM service.

Intercessory Prayer Group 5/18

St. George’s Intercessory Prayer Group will meet at 9:45 AM on Sunday, May 18 in the St. George Room. If you are interested in joining the Intercessory Prayer Group, please speak with Ron Crocker about it.

Adult Forum 5/18

St. George’s holds an Adult Forum on Sundays from 10:00 to 10:50 AM in the parish hall. On May 18 associate rector Suzannah Rohman will begin a two-week series on “Who is Jesus to you?” This is a follow-on to our Holy Tuesday Reflection Night topic on March 18, but you need not have attended the earlier session to participate in this series.

St. George’s vestry will meet on Wednesday, May 21, for a regularly scheduled meeting. The meeting will begin at 7:30 PM and will be held in Room 114.

Trivium After Work 5/22

Trivium (20s and 30s) Episcopalians gather After Work on fourth Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. After Work will meet at Clarendon Grill (1101 N. Highland St) on May 22.

Time Out 5/24 and 2nd and 4th Saturdays thereafter

Time Out—a fellowship group for women—meets in the Rhodes Room at the church at 7:30 AM on second and fourth Saturdays.

No Sunday School 5/25

St. George’s Sunday School will not meet on Sunday, May 25, due to it being the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Classes will resume on June 1.

No Adult Forum 5/25

St. George’s usually holds an Adult Forum on Sundays from 10:00 to 10:50 AM in the parish hall. However, the group will not meet on May 25 due to it being a holiday weekend. Happy Memorial Day!

Caregivers Discussion Group 5/25

The Parish Care Ministry is sponsoring a Caregivers Discussion Group, a monthly opportunity for those interested in meeting and sharing experiences and information. The next meeting will be on Sunday, May 25, from 10:10 to 11:10 AM in the Rhodes Room.

Youth choirs visit St. George’s 5/25

St. George’s will host two youth choirs from New York, New York, over Memorial Day weekend. The choirs will sing at the 9:00 and 11:00 AM services; we hope that you will join us and hear them sing.

Memorial Day holiday 5/26

St. George’s parish office will be closed on May 26 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. It will reopen on Tuesday, May 26.

No Monday Bible study 5/26

St. George’s Monday Bible study will not meet on Monday, May 26, due to it being the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Monday Bible study will meet again on Monday, June 2, if there is a make-up day to be done.

St. George’s has a summer “pick-up” choir that sings during the 11:00 AM service on the first Sunday of each summer month. This is your opportunity to try singing in the choir without further commitment; just show up in the Choir Room at 10:45 AM on Sunday, June 1, ready to sing.

First Sunday: Night of Sacred Opera 6/1

St. George’s holds a special worship service on “first Sundays” of each month, October through June, at 6:00 PM in the church. On June 1 the service will be a night of sacred opera: a double bill of L’Enfant Prodigue (The Prodigal Son) of Debussy, and Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) of Puccini. Let sacred opera inform your soul. All are invited to attend.

St. George’s vestry members and other program leaders will meet on Saturday, June 7, from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM in the parish hall. The purpose of the meeting is to coordinate big-picture program plans for the coming year and to determine one or two parish-wide events on which to focus this year.

We’ll meet the second Thursday of every month; same place, same time. All are welcome to join us. Remaining dates in 2008 are: June 12, July 10, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11.

St. George’s Worship Committee has decided to hold only two worship services on summer Sundays, June 22 through August 31, at 7:45 and 10:00 AM. The 10:00 AM service will be in lieu of the 9:00 and 11:00 AM service, and will rotate between the two service formats.

St. George’s Urban Abbey will gather for a community meeting in the parish hall on Thursday, June 26, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The meeting will include a celebration of the community’s fifth anniversary, remembering the June 26, 2003, celebration when the first 22 members joined the Urban Abbey. All people are invited to attend.

Homecoming Sunday, backpack/briefcase blessings, and Ministry Fair 9/7

St. George’s will celebrate “homecoming Sunday” on September 7, the day when folks typically return from their far-flung summer vacation spots and the new program year begins. We will have the opportunity to bless backpacks and briefcases (and the like) at all services on this date. We will hold our annual Ministry Fair to share information about our many programs. And we will have registration for all parents to enroll their children in Sunday School (if they have not yet done so online).

Monday Bible study resumes 9/15

St. George’s Monday Bible study will study two books of the Bible in 2008-2009: Exodus and Acts. We will use resources published by Kerygma. Each resource book costs $23 ($46 for both). If you would like to participate, but cannot afford the book, scholarships are available. For more information, and/or to have a book ordered for you, please contact Suzannah Rohman. We will begin with Exodus at noon in Room 207 on Mondays, beginning September 15. On September 15 we will look at “Introduction: The Book of Exodus and Biblical Theology.”

St. George’s will hold its annual parish picnic on Sunday, September 21, at noon at Bluemont Park.

St. George’s will hold worship services on Christmas Eve, December 24, at 5:00 PM, 7:30 PM, and 10:30 PM. The 5:00 PM service will be a Christmas pageant and Eucharist in which all children are invited to participate. The latter two services are choral Eucharist services.

St. George’s will hold worship services on Christmas Day, December 25, at 10:00 AM. Come sing Christmas carols and celebrate Christmas with us.

Evensong 5/3

St. George’s will hold a choral Evensong service on Sunday, May 3, at 6:00 PM, in the church. All are invited.

Newcomer Dinner 5/3

St. George’s will hold a Newcomer Dinner after the Evensong service (at around 7:00 PM) on Sunday, May 3. If you are new to St. George’s (or would like to be), please join us in the parish hall for dinner.
