Where to Park

On average, St. George’s has about 260 people in church every Sunday—80 at 8 AM, 160 at 10:30 AM, and 15 at 5 PM. And, being a community-involved, active church, St. George’s is also a busy place during the weekdays and evenings throughout the week. “So,” you may wonder, “where can I park?”

First choice is in St. George’s 13-space lot at the corner of North Oakland Street and Fairfax Drive (numbered “1” on the map above). It’s positively spacious by urban standards, and includes two handicapped spaces. If you’re real neighborly, 14 or 15 vehicles can squeeze in the remaining spaces. St. George’s also has a new 18-space lot at the corner of North Oakland and North Ninth Streets.

Second choice is ten newly-permitted, on-street parking spaces on North 9th Street at the San José end of the facility (numbered “4” on the map above). You can now park there on weeknights after 7:00 PM and all weekend—best yet, it’s absolutely free.

There are nine regular and one handicapped-access spaces in metered on-street parking on North Nelson Street and four regular spaces on Fairfax Drive. We are working to obtain a few more spaces in each of these areas.

Next choice might be the San José driveway, in which three vehicles are sometimes observed.

Other parishioners are very creative. One, who will remain nameless, jokes that he actually parks in another member’s driveway near the church. I’ve also heard about creative use of guest parking in nearby condominium complexes. My favorite, though, comes from a person who lives in Crystal City and insists the best place to park is at home—she takes the Orange Line to the Virginia Square metro station and emerges right at St. George’s front door. On weekends and holidays, you can park FREE at Metro operated lots.

Whatever your strategy, remember the two rules: “First come, first parked;” and, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Then, too, our commercial neighbors our very good to us. Thanks to Connie McAdam, who arranged and maintains our parking agreements, St. Georgians have access to over 100 more spaces.

Bank of America, at the corner of Fairfax Drive and North Nelson Street, makes eight spaces available on Saturdays after 1 PM, all day on Sundays, and after 7 PM on weeknights. You must display a special parking pass provided by the church, park furthest from the bank’s automatic teller machine (ATM), and observed posted parking signs (numbered “5” on the map above). Please note: if you park there at other times you will be towed.

The lot behind the Sequoia Bank building at the corner of North Oakland and North 9th Streets (numbered “3” on the map above), used to be openly available on Sundays for our use but it is now a pay-for-parking lot. St. Georgians can park there on Sundays only and must display a special parking pass (available each month at the church). Do not park at the Pizza Hut next door to the bank.

The Georgetown Medical Center at Ballston, which is entered off 10th Street to park in spaces nearest to Fairfax Drive, makes 50 spaces available on Sunday mornings from 8 AM to 2 PM, on Sunday evenings from 5 to 7 PM, and on weekday evenings from 7:30 to 9 PM (numbered “9” on the map above). The facility is open for business during the week, so please be a good guest.

There also is a small medical building lot (numbered “6” on the map above) available weekdays after 7 PM and on weekends.

The parking lot for Arlington’s main library (numbered “7” on the map above), accessed from 10th Street, is available when the library is not open, on: Friday and Saturday nights after 5:00 PM and Sundays until 1:00 PM. Please obey all posted parking signs there.

Parking is allowed on the north side of 9th Street between North Nelson and North Oakland Streets (after 7 PM on weeknights and all day on weekends). There are five parking spaces on 10th street available on Sundays (marked “8” on the map above).

There are up to 24 spaces available all day on Sundays at Tower Villas, which is located across North Oakland Street from St. George’s. Don’t hesitate to drive into the open part of the garage. We suggest that you use the entrance marked “Commercial Parking.” rather than the one nearest to Fairfax Drive. Upon entering, make a left turn into the area with signs indicating commercial or employee parking.

Also, Arlington residents and visitors may park for free at 400 spaces in the underground garage of the Arlington County Department of Human Services building at 3033 Wilson Boulevard weekday evenings from 5:30 PM to 2:30 AM and on weekends and holidays from 10 AM to 2:30 AM. Access to the garage is located on North Highland Street. Security Guards are posted in the building’s lobby and in the parking garage for patrons’ safety. If your other parking options fail, Clarendon is but one metro stop from St. George’s!

Before we leave the subject of parking completely, we need to talk about parking in the lot during the week: please don’t, unless you are inside St. George’s facility at the time. There are many activities that occur here during the day, especially on Wednesdays, and if your car is here without you being present, you will deprive someone else of the opportunity to participate. But do come by—we love to see you in person!
