 I
thought you all might be interested in seeing this extremely rare photo of Saint
George posing with Saint Mentos (see left) before Mentos performed a great work
(see right).
George makes periodic visits to St. George’s, as he is the patron saint of
the organization. However, Sunday, September 17, 2006, was Mentos’ first
visit.
According to “The Least Feasts and Fasts,” which describes
the most obscure and non-existent saints:
“Saint Mentos of Troas was a fifth century Greek mystic who lived in the
tradition of the Desert Fathers. Born into a wealthy merchant family, he left
that world of wealth and power to embrace the ascetic life of self-denial and
prayer. Saint Mentos was known for his keen sense of humor and his unusually
sweet breath. People were drawn to him by his power of speech and the sweetness
of his message. He is also remembered for the miracles associated with his
effervescence. He was known to cause the content of a bottle of wine to explode
into a twenty-foot fountain of bubbles and noise. On a lesser note, he is
remembered as the patron saint of church bazaars and ministry fairs.”
