Christ the King Sunday

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is the Last After Pentecost: Christ the King. Christ the King Sunday crowns the church year and fills us with wonder, love and praise for our Lord who reigns in glory, and yet became “one of the least of these” for our sake.

This Sunday’s service is lovely, and made especially so by the anthem offered by members of our Saint Cecelia choir and Saint George’s choristers. Our young people give us a wonderful gift as they sing Jusuf Kamadjadja’s “I Lift Up My Eyes”,

I lift up my eyes to the hills on high,

I wonder from where my help comes.

I lift up my heart to the Lord on high,

my creator will my help provide.

Neither slumber nor sleep,

Be a shade at my right hand,

God of Israel, all people, the world.

Through the day and the through the night,

God will ever keep my life,

My Creator, my Redeemer, my Friend.

But who is this God? so many will ask:

Creator, Redeemer and Friend?

I tell you God is love, God is peace, God is strength;

God makes enemies neighbors, ends all wars.

In a world that’s filled with hate, in a world that's filled with greed,

God alone shapes the love that makes peace.

In a world thats filled with war, filled with prejudice and strife,

God alone shapes the peace that brings love.

I lift up my eyes to the hills on high,

I wonder from where my help comes?

I lift up my heart to the Lord on high, my creator will my help provide.

Never let my foot slip, God will never fall asleep,

my Redeemer, my Creator, my Lord.

Ever keep me from harm, God will ever keep my life,

my Protector, my Guardian, my Lord.

When I heard our children singing this during the worship video for Sunday, I was deeply moved, especially given the fraught times in which we live. May this song, this prayer, this witness, be on our lips and in our hearts. I look forward to experiencing the majesty and humility of God together this Christ the King Sunday.

Yours in Christ,

Shearon+
