I’M NEW HERE
Welcome!
We are so grateful for your interest in the Saint George’s community. We invite you to explore our website and hope that you will soon visit us in person or join us online for worship. Below are the answers to commonly asked questions, but don’t hesitate to reach out should you need more information.
Saint George’s Church in Arlington, Virginia, is an inclusive, caring and multigenerational congregation. Saint George’s bridges urban and suburban: our church is surrounded by high-rise offices and condominiums, but neighborhoods of single-family houses are only two blocks away. We are located at the Virginia Square Metro station which connects us to the rest of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. This richness makes us a congregation from all walks and stages of life, and we aspire to more fully reflect the diversity of our vibrant setting.
We welcome newcomers through our doors almost every week. Some are short-term visitors to the Washington area, some will be in our community for a few months or years for professional assignments, and others will be here for a lifetime. We constantly strive to minister to the changing community directly outside our doors and to find our place in this urban environment.
We not only welcome you, we accept you. No matter who you are or where you are in your faith journey, we welcome you to join us.
SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE
8:00 am: A traditional Rite I service with Holy Eucharist and a sermon, and music during the offertory, communion, and postlude, as well as a closing hymn.
10:30 am: A broad Episcopal Rite II service. Worshipers at this service are inspired every Sunday by the anthems sung by our St. George's Choir, the organ music of our music director, Ben Keseley, and the voices of the whole congregation joining in the hymns and service music.
WEDNESDAY EUCHARIST
12:05pm: This informal Eucharist is Rite I on the first Wednesday of each month and Rite II the rest of the time. Lections are often those for Saints' days. There is a short interactive homily.
We would love to see you soon!
FAQ
Q: WHO SHOULD I EXPECT TO FIND AT SAINT GEORGE'S?
A: We are a community of varied ages, genders, ethnic and racial backgrounds, nationalities and geographic origins, sexual orientations, economic situations, family structures, abilities, and religious backgrounds. We have life-long Virginians and those who will only be in the area for a short time. We are single, married, partnered, divorced, widowed, remarried and "it's complicated." We are clergy, community activists, bankers, photographers, artists, lawyers, architects, students, and everything in between. Needless to say, if you show up you will most likely find someone like you (and, even better, build relationships with those who aren't).
We are an inclusive and vibrant community committed to loving and living the questions. All are welcome and valued.
Q: I AM NOT AN EPISCOPALIAN. CAN I COME TO YOUR CHURCH?
A: Absolutely. All are invited. All are welcome. And, we can almost guarantee that you won't be the only non-Episcopalian in attendance.
WHAT’S AN EPISCOPALIAN ANYWAY?
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world.
We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.
We believe that God loves you - no exceptions.
WHAT IS THE DRESS-CODE?
At Saint George’s we encourage you to come as you are. Worshipers attend our services wearing everything from dresses and suit coats with ties to blue jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers. Whatever you may choose to wear, we look forward to your presence among us.
ARE CHILDREN WELCOME DURING WORSHIP SERVICES?
At Saint George’s, our deep commitment to respecting and valuing all persons extends joyfully to the youngest members of our congregation.
While we have many options available for children on Sunday mornings, all children are welcome in worship services. Our youngest parishioners are not only welcome, they are valued.
DO YOU WELCOME THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS?
Absolutely. Saint George's welcomes all without exception.
Practically, we offer handicap parking in our small parking lot located at the corner of North Oakland Street and North Fairfax Drive. You will find our back doors and front doors accessible. Once inside, please don't hesitate to let an usher or member of our clergy or staff know if you need assistance - most especially during the Eucharist, when ushers are available (and more than happy) to assist. Saint Georgians are a welcome group of diverse abilities, and we would love to have you join us.
If you have a child with special needs, please contact our Associate Rector, the Reverend Paddy Cavanaugh to let us know how we might make attendance at St. George's an easier and more comfortable experience for your family.
