Our New Associate Rector
Dear Friends,
It is with great joy that I announce the calling of our new Interim Associate Rector, the Rev. Dr. Karin J. Ekholm! Her first day with us will be Sunday, June 15th. I know you will give her a warm Saint George’s welcome.
Mother Karin will be with us through December 2025. A search process for a long-term associate will begin late-fall.
Mother Karin (pronounced with a long “a” as in “car”) comes to us from Christ Church Georgetown. She was ordained to the priesthood in June 2024 and was in the same seminary class as Father Paddy Cavanaugh, who is delighted that she is joining us. Mother Karin is also a cultural historian and taught at Saint John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland prior her call to ordained ministry. She brings a wealth of gifts and experience and she will no doubt enrich our communal life tremendously.
Mother Karin will be sharing sacramental ministry with me as well as offering pastoral care, leading our children and youth ministry and being the clergy partner for our social justice ministry. I give great thanks to the vestry and the wonderful team that joined me in this discernment, Liza Lowe (Senior Warden), Victor Tolomeo (Junior Warden), Dr. Ben Keseley (Minister of Music), Lyn Crawford (Social Justice Convener) and Melanie Lilliston (Children and Youth Chair).
Please see below for a self-introduction from Mother Karin.
I look forward to this new beginning at Saint George’s!
Yours in Christ,
Shearon+
From Mother Karin:
I am delighted to have been called to serve as the Interim Associate Rector at St. George's! I grew up in Austria and Germany, I lived in the UK and Egypt, and I enjoy hearing people's stories and learning about different cultures. I discerned a call to the priesthood after two decades of academic research and teaching. I hold a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science, and last spring, I completed a Master of Divinity degree at Virginia Theological Seminary. My son, Marco, is a middle school student at St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School, and he's excited to join the youth trip to North Carolina. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, and spending time outdoors with Marco.
